Regardless of what your friend says, please go to either Sellier or Beloit or Winchester white box 115 gr. FMJ. Then start borowing your friends' magazines until you find the right combo. 147 gr. SubSonic loads MAY work for him but they are a crap-shoot. And more expensive.
And be certain that you are gripping the gun tightly.

Some Lugers will eat any ammo, while others are more careful about their diet.

Remember the acronym: A. M. M. O. (Ammunition, Magazine, Mainspring, Other, which includes things like modifications, tight shooting grip, etc.)
