To my tired old eyes it looks like the holstered pistol he's carrying is a birds head handled double barrel with mule ear hammers. Can you younger blokes make it out?

John, I saved the pic to my computer and blew it up. Looks like 2 hammers to me.

Hope you get it, Ron....what a cool pic! Would love to know the story behind it.....the text speculates it was taken in 1892, but obviously it must be a bit later. How in the world did a Borchardt end up in the hands of a Northwest Indian chief? There must have been some pretty modern trading posts out his way!

More likely a posed photo out on the reservation. There was great demand for "Wild West" memorabilia at the turn of the 19th, beginning of the 20th. Century. There was a huge industry producing fakes for tenderfeet out east and eager European customers, who were fascinated with the era.

Gussying up a Brave or Chief for a showy photo was not unheard of.

The photo is pretty sharp even for a web photo. The Borchardt is a DWM. The handgun is a revolver...very unlikely to have two hammers! What looks like a second hammer is actually a thong threaded through the top edge of the holster probably to secure the gun in the holster.

I would have to agree, Ron. It looks like a small, bird's head, pocket revolver in a home-made leather holster.

Anybody want to take a guess at the rifle? It looks like it doesn't have a hammer and the reciever looks humpback.

Definitely a Winchester... can't tell which model. The hammer is hard to see as it appears in front of the Chief's belt which is a similar color shade in the photo.
