I suspect that this is not an original marking...because I think they are aftermarket grips. This probably happened somewhere in the post-war period by some retailer...

Took a longer look; you are correct, sir! I'd noticed the sort of straight line aspect to the upper left of the character that was initially diagnosed as an "S" but let slide this evidence that it was something other than an s. sorry, my mistake.
