Rule of thumb, prior to mid 1920's all bottoms were wood, then they started to switch over, some exceptions but that is fairly true for German Lugers.
Aluminum for all Mausers until about 1941 (?) when fxo plastic bottoms appeared. You will find aluminum and black plastic at same time (technically not plastic).
