What does a post production nickel plate do to collectiblity?

It destroys collectibility for the purist. That, being said, there is a growing nitch for these guns as they have a "post war" context of GIs nickeling them to throw into their tackle box, glove compartment, etc. after the war.
They still bring shooter prices, minus, but are nice in their own right.

From a serious collector's stand point, pretty much wipes it out.

Look at the time stamps and responses on the last two posts...that is about as close to simultaneous and exact as you will get!

Anything done to a Luger after it leaves the factory adversely affects the value. Collectors want one as with that close to made yesterday look to it but original.

If you do a Search, there are a couple pics of plated Lugers with various aftermarket grips. IMHO, a nickle finished Luger with ivory grips looks pretty sharp. Chrome, not so much...

I would add that pure economics also come into play. As nice Lugers become less and less affordable, nickeled Lugers provide an entry level for the average Joe and are therefore becoming more and more desirable.

Thanx for the answers, guys. I've got a pretty good lookin' s42 nickel plated "on visual" - but the seller wants $1200 for it. I'm thinkin' not...

Zorba..Add a few dollars to that number and you will be able to buy a very respectable collector piece. Spend your money on a nice normal Luger. You won't regret it later when you go to sell. And you won't have to look at a pimp gun every time you open the safe. I know there's a niche for chromed guns but I thank my lucky stars I am not infected.
