Interesting Trivia: Remember, you heard it here first

During the 1970s, Interarms seriously considered asking Mauser to take up production of the C96 pistol again. They asked Mauser for a fully functional version, but if the C96 would not pass the US firearms safety tests, if they could produce a C96 air pistol instead.

Mauser declined, they had been struggling to get the Parabellum and HSc sold at a decent profit, so they figured (rightfully so) that the C96 would be a guaranteed loss.
