My Dads' Navy Medal !

My half sister found me on facebook and mailed me a picture of my father in the Navy and an award. Years earlier he later left for cigarettes in 1962 and never returned. I'm told he died while I was in law school. Can anyone ID the award? Eric

Eric,

I believe you have two things here actually.

The ribbon and lapel pin are for the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Awarded for outstanding achievement or meritorious service not of a nature that would otherwise warrant awarding the Commendation Medal.

The medal itself is the Navy Good Conduct Medal awarded for three or four years of good conduct, i.e. you stayed out of trouble.

I'm on thin ice here. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can help out.

In the photograph it looks as though the Officer has just received his Commission and is about to "deep-six" his Chief's cover in a time honored ceremony.

Thank You! Dad was an underwater demolition expert. He later was a hard hat diver and consultant on 'Sea Hunt' and knew Lloyd Bridges. Later he worked as a sponge diver in Tarpon springs Fla. He always smoked and died of lung cancer in 1985. Two years ago my sister found me and shes the one who sent me the medal! I never knew of her.

Before he retired he served on the USN Thorn. I had his original coffee mug from the Thorn!
