General of the Army Dwight David Eisenhower was, in times of stress at least, a four pack a day smoker and this could be supplemented by up to 15 cups of coffee a day.
He died in February 1969 after nearly a year in Ward Eight of Walter Reed Army Hospital of congestive heart failure after two previous heart attacks, the first in 1955 while he was President Eisenhower. Smoking was generally accepted in those days and not the health risk that it is now known to be. David |
