In an odd way (and tragic way), WWI was an oversized family discussion...

When Wilhelm II died in exile, in Holland, in June, 1941, the nazis made a State Funeral for him, in spite of his wishes on the contrary. On this footage, you can see, among the mouners, the last Generalfieldmarschall from the German Empire then alive, August von Mackensen, in his full Hussar uniform, including busby.

A nice anecdote surrounding the Kaiser's exile in the Netherlands was that the queen (Wilhelmina) never wanted to meet him, as she had 'no respect for someone who fled his country in times of war'.

When Germany invaded, she fled the country.
