Or a normal round followed a squib load down the barrel, thus the crude shortening and reworking of the end of the barrel /front sight, along with the cracked receiver.

Looks like someone took the bubba approach and shoved an artillery barrel, which was already shortened at the muzzle, into a 'donor' pistol. Note that the pistol lacks the cutout for the artillery rear sight at the front.
