The guy I bought this from offered it to me for $700. He said it had been in his family for a real long time. I told him, if I find out it’s worth a lot more, I would make it right with him if I sell it.

Sounds like you could end up on Judge Judy with a contract like that...

Your pistol is looking good with a few caveats. It could be worth $2000 as it stands depending on better photo's and answers to a couple of questions.

IF your intention is to sell it I would sell it as is. If you put another 800 in it you will have a pretty pistol..NO a pretty re finished pistol.Refinished pistols are always less desirable to collectors.

The pistol does not look re finished..the markings are crisp. Often the strawed parts turn dark from storage conditions.

If your intention is to keep it for your collection then do whatever makes you happy. It doesn't sound that way though.
