Grip Cleaning and Restoration

Can anyone please give me their opinion on weather or not cleaning the grips on a collector grade Luger as per Art Buchanan's article on Grip Cleaning and Restoration located under General Information will have an adverse effect on the value. That information may be available in some of the older posts but I have not been able to locate it. Thanks for any help you can offer. Lon

Lon, it has been brought up, many times (but remember, I have been on this site for a billion years).

No, it will not affect value. I kinda believe if your gun is a bit worn and you re-checker them and make them look new, then yes, folks will do a double take.

But I have cleaned numerous grips and it just makes them look nicer.

Personally, I use several things, but my favorite is either Simple Green or Murphy's Oil Soap, either work excellent and then after they dry, you use boiled linseed oil or the like on them and they look good.

Be advised that after you clean and they dry, they will turn grayish and look awful

Thanks Ed, I will give it a try on some of the grips on my "shooter Luger's first. I have great respect for your advice and opinions and am anxious to see the results. Lon

Ed is right on. I think the guiding principal should be the overall look of the pistol. If the metal is pristine and the grips look a little tired, then by all means clean. It the metal shows considerable wear then the grips should reflect that and not look like new.

In other words; the cuffs and collar should match..
