Marvin, military and police are usually required to have a lanyard.
It isn't just for looks, if you are running through the woods after a bad guy, the last thing you want is for your pistol not to be there. But, with full flap pistols, I don't believe that it will just fall out, but if the higher ups say you have to have a lanyard.... And Orv, that is unusual, I haven't seen anything like that before.
