Michael Collins

I was reading some info on Michael Collins today and came across a photo of him on wikipedia. Shows him in uniform, in a courtyard..perhaps a church yard. Several school children behind him, they were in school uniform. He is wearing a handgun on his right side in a rather low holster. I expanded it up to 400x. Looks to me to be a Broom, maybe c-96 or Bolo. This was in 1921/1922. What do you think? BTW, best of New Year wishes to all.

Could be...I think he looks a lot like Michael Schumacher...

The article caption says Portobello Barracks...

Probably is. Germany and Ireland were staunch allies and the Republican Army employed every type imaginable of German arms during the "Troubles".

I guess I could google him and find out, but the question is, who is he (or was most likely)?

Ed, Michael Collins apparently was (and is) a very important figure in Ireland. He was killed in August 1922 during the Irish revolution. Some hold him in the highest esteem as the founder of the Irish Free State. I would read up on him before visiting any Irish pubs!

As stated by DR, Michael Collins was the most significant figure in struggle for the Irish Free State. Leader in Sinn Fein. True patriot. In our society though he would be looked upon as a terrorist. Funny how time changes the mantle of greatness.

In my humble opinion, I think the goals of the "terrorist" Michael Collins and the apparent goals of todays' terrorists were and are vastly different, including the means to achieve them.

I totally agree. Funny how a revolution and rebels in one country are looked upon as saviors and from another country or cause as terrorists. Michael Collins is a hero to me. My great, great grandparents came here from county Cork.

Yes, home for the month, and in fact had an interview for a job in WA state; and I wouldn't go back, but if it falls through, I will be heading back to the box

I spent 9 days in Ireland over the Thanksgiving Holidays... saw the whole green island and was very impressed. Got to see Derry (formerly Londonderry) and Belfast too. Got my mini education on the "troubles" from a guy who lived through it all... he says that he feels that there will be a united Ireland in my lifetime. That's great!

A great vacation that I would recommend to anyone... after all, I am proud of all the Irish blood that's in me (sorry, ...not a drop)...

, but I had a great time.

Great history, great friendly folks, and scenery to knock your socks off!
