Unhappy Extraction problem

I have one of the early stainless steel Aimco lugers. It has a problem with extracting the spent shell. When fired, the shell stays in the chamber causing an interesting jam. The problem occurs with almost every shot fired. I have cleaned the chamber very well and have not noticed any roughness in the chamber. I can cycle (by hand) loaded ammo from the mag, to the chamber, and extract without any problems. Has anyone else had this kind of extraction problem? The extractor spring seems to be a little weak. I can move it with my finger quite easily (pushing down on the extractor furthest from the hook) with about the same pressure it takes to pull the trigger. Is this normal? Any other ideas? I have recently taken the extractor out and filed a little in the center to get a more complete grip on the casing. I have not shot the pistol since making this modification. The chamber does seem to be a little generous in size-could this cause any problems? Oh, I was shooting factory Remington UMC 115 gr 9mm. On the upside, it does load from the magazine well. Sorry for the long first post. I really like this pistol and would like to find its full potential (being able to shoot a full mag without having a major jam). Thanks

Are there any bulges or marks on fired cases?

BK, Best case you need a new extractor or spring. Worst case, your barrel is not head spaced properly for the ammo that you are using (try some other brands) and will have to be replaced. TH

The fired cases are fairly bulged-more so than anyother 9mm that I have. I wondered about that (headspace). Does anyone know where to get a replacement stainless barrel? Or could I have the pistol barrel relined? Thanks for the help.

I recommend you try Winchester 115 Gr. ammo in the 100 round bulk box (at Walmart it is about $11 a box)... this ammo seems to give good performance for most Luger owners who try it. make sure your Luger is properly lubricated, and the chamber is clean and dry.

Have that guns headspace and chamber checked out by a good Gunsmith that knows Lugers. A good going over now may save you a lot of trouble later!

is the closest I know of... he can definitely help you if he has time... you can also look for one of his posts here on the forum, and send him a private message... it would be faster than snail mail.

I know this is an old thread but I recently solved the same problem (failure to extract). My extractor looked like new and the extractor spring had good tension. The chamber looked a little frosty. I put some polishing compound on a brass cleaning brush and put the cleaning rod with brush on the end in an electric drill. I spun it in the chamber for about 30 seconds. The chamber looks shiny and now it extracts every time. Maybe this will help someone else with the same problem.

I don't know how the chamber initially became rough. The bore itself is absolutely a mirror.
