The New Centenarians 1910-2010

Sometime during the coming year each of these slick-backs will pass the century mark. Each is unit marked to a cavalry regiment. The great plurality of all reported unit marked 1910's are cavalry marked.

I'm sure the gun racks at the DWM factory in 1910 looked exactly like your first photo. Amazing!!!

George, the drool has dried a little and I was wondering if you would give us some idea of how long and generally how you accumulated such a fantastic group of specifically unit marked early military lugers. It takes a blue moon to see one of these early dates available on the web sites or gun shows (perhaps you already cornered the market!).

Buster, it's all a matter of focus. First thing you do is go into the gun room and take all the 1900's,06's, Krieghoffs, and other Lugers and sell them. Then with a bundle of cash in your pocket you start the hunt.

Up until a few years ago many collectors and "BIG" dealers looked down their noses at unit marked pistols. Some considered the markings detractions from the value. Then with Jan Still's publication of "Imperial Lugers" it all began to change. The internet further hastened the change. One can only imagine what the year 2014 will bring.

Thanks George, for your philospohy. Problem is that I'm still too enamoured with the 1900's, 1906's, HK's, etc., to sell them. Despite this, I rarely see first issues, 1910 or 1911 dated DWM lugers at shows for sale these days. It seems that 1917 and 1918 dates are vastly predominant, perhaps because of their sheer quantities.

I can only repeat what has been stated before, George this is a fantastic collection of relatively hard to find Lugers. Thank you for showing us your treasures.

The third photo shows the wood magazine bottoms with added numbering of the style used for German Navy replacements.

I was not aware that the German Army marked the magazines in this manner. I would be grateful if anyone could please comment on this practice.

Until 1911 and suffix e all DWM magazines were stamped with the large numbers.
