Should i buy it??

Hi, im looking at a 1918 DWM Luger for sale it will be my 1st Luger. All matching except for clip, 1 grip and toggle, comes with a holster J.F.C lucas berlin 1915 has some marks on grip strap was reblued not sure when. hes asking $800 for it....is it worth it??
any info appreicated

Try $800 in the last 15 minutes if no one else wants it. I heard it's $30 back some years ago (equivalent of today's $600 putting inflation into consideration).

So im better off to get a mis-matched one if i am going to shoot it? does finish matter if its mis matched?

That depends on what you want?

If just looking for a shooter, than find one nice looking in 9mm and decide how much you want to spend.

I would say "Yes" because you always run the risk of breaking a serially numbered part when you are shooting an all matching Luger. And if you break a serially part on a matching Luger, you will drop the value of the gun by 30 to 50%. (in my opinion)

I would say "Not much." If it's mismatched and still looks "okay" to you, then the next thing to look at on your "shooter" is probably the condition of the bore.

They are fun to shoot.

It would if you're looking at the one on GB...But it's at that price now ($755) with two days to go...

The one you're looking at has only one dark pic, no description, no mention of numbers, no comment on the bore, not even a caliber...What marks does it have on it, what is the serial, do the numbers really match, has it been refinished? (the edges on the side of the chamber look smoothed), amount of finish remaining?, state of the grips (repros?), it looks to be a commercial, but if it has markings on the grip strap it may be military?, toggle doesn't match?...

My gut feeling would be that it is not worth $800 but I really know nothing about Lugers except they make a loud noise when you pull the trigger...

I would try very hard to get the one on Gunbroker; it looks like a good one. I routinely replace the most commonly broken parts (extractor, ejector, firing pin, grips) on a matching gun if I am going to shoot it. Doesn't mean something else can't break but that reduces the chance to something I can live with.

I think many times new luger owners (or want to be a new luger owner) are in too much of a rush.

There are more lugers for sale here that I trust than on gunbroker. Although many lugers go from here to there if not sold...

In a few days the Luger mentioned above (gunbroker #142546244 ) will be in my hands. I will give a full report. Hopefully it looks as good in real life as it does in the photos.

OK; let's talk more about the one you posted...(pic below)...

Do you like it??? How's the bore look??? Are there any XXX's on it anywhere??? The grips look worn...are they??? What are the markings on the grip strap???

Are you going to shoot this regularly??? Or just to verify that everything works???

It looks to me to be a commercial Luger...is it 9mm or 7.65mm???

You say it was re-blued...did the bluer buff a lot of the sharp edges off???

Is this a gun shop or a private owner???

I had to Gamma-correct your pic...it was way too dark for my monitor...so if the blueing looks too light, it's my fault...

I have both a commercial 7.65mm and a S/42 [military, WW II] 9mm and I must admit I like the "military" issue better...It has a lot more interesting things to look at (numbered pieces) and verify...and if you do get a mismatch (mine is), it affords you the long-term goal of perhaps acquiring matching numbered parts to make it "all matching"...

Many people on Yahoo gun forum talking about aging a reblued gun and making it more "original" via acid, steam, cooking, etc, restamping to create "matching" guns, etc, etc. Although they did not post pictures of their products, I would believe most work is still on amateur level. I have not been there for long long time.... at least that's the case in the past.

The image created on new member is not unlike a story that I heard regarding gas station: Regular, Plus and Super in gas station coming from different pipes, but all pipes connecting to the same pool inside the pump
