I have finished about 25 M1 garand stocks over the last few years. The best thing I have found is a item called PURPLE POWER ,it is similar to Simple Green but works much faster. Most of the stocks I have done are not collector grade.I spray on PP then rinse with warm water. If you do not want to use water, use acetone or mineral spirts. The wood will be totally free of oil, grim, grease etc.I buy it by the gallon for about $6.00 at Advance Auto Parts, can also find it at Walmart I am told. It really works, you will be surprised.
