Default removing cosmoline grease

I have an artillery sight that is packed in cosmoline
grease. What is the best way to remove the grease?
Would something like gasoline work?

Gasoline, an old tooth brush or small paint brush, and no sparks or cigarettes in the area.

Default grease removed

Thanks Guys,
I first tried the lacquer thinner method and
a small brush. That worked fine.

I bought the fine tune sight with Erfurt proofs from a guy in
the UK. Whatever the grease, it was pretty dried up. I'm
guessing it was casmoline (or is that only a USA product).
No idea how the guy in the UK got the sight originally. The
blueing is perfect.
