Hello,
the S/42 stamp was not applied by Mauser. Most probably by the armorer of the unit. Some prewar RG34 are marked with "G" or "K" for rifle/carbine and the serial# of the gun. Some RG34 are marked with a unit stamp. This is the only one I've seen so far with such a detailed allocation to a certain gun. attached photo shows a RG34 with Navy acceptance and unit marking.
