I recently shipped a handgun via UPS 2nd day air to the high bidder's FFL dealer in OK City. Now that dealer is calling me and wanting a blown up photocopy of my driver's license, supposedly so that he can log it in.
I've never been asked that before and quite honestly he's creeping me out. Is this common practice, is it required by law, or can I tell him to take a hike? DJU |

There is no where that it says it is "required", however, he by law has to know who he is receiving it from; so although it weirded me out when someone asked; as I had already sent my FFL 03 to them...

In my state (FL) any FFL-01 holder has to have a DL from the seller to log in a transfer. I was in a local gun store that a customer had a HK-91 clone delivered to that he had purchased off of Gunbroker. The rifle was shipped without a bill of sale or copy of sellers DL. When contacted, the seller refused to send his ID. The shops owner had no choice but to call the ATFE to pick up what was now a contraband rifle and the buyer was out nearly $1000. MR

IMO, just send a copy of driver's license to him. Not a big deal. Just like selling a house, "open house" session is inavoidable (I heard fore-clousure has different procedure?), legal gun sellers have to sacrifice a little bit privacy. But only send to FFL holders, you have their licenses verified on ATF website. Sending via snail USPS mail to the licensed address.

I went to my local dealer yesterday to pick up a modern rifle bought off GunBroker and now you have to have 2 forms of ID showing your street address. Everything in my wallet had only my P.O. address. I ended up using my property tax papers for ID plus the C & R license which has my street address. My dealer has known me for years as well as where I live. Doug

If an FFL-03 or 01 dealer sends a gun to another dealer (transfer) and is done w/o a bill of sale, how does it become a contraband. Maybe I'm missing something here Jim

Jim, The seller shipped the rifle from a UPS store not telling the clerk that there was a rifle in the box. It arrived at the gunshop with a handwritten note to the buyer, nothing else. For whatever reason the seller tried to do an end run around the whole legal transfer process. MR
