Finally, I get to post and say "I just bought my first Luger!" I'm pretty sure there's nothing especially collectible about it - which is fine with me because I want a shooter. Very little bluing remains anywhere, but the metal is mostly in good shape. On the barrel there are several tiny rust spots you can see but not feel. There were no accessories and only one magazine. The guy I bought it from said he had lost one of the two magazines several years ago, and of course it was the one with a matching s/n. The remaining magazine has no numbers on it whatsoever. Any info about the pistol would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting marking on the left of the barrel??
Welcome to the forum! a luge ris a luger, so congrats. Interesting that the serial number was placed where it is on the left, makes me think it was a restamp. The magazine has been ground, as they didn't issue them with a suffix without a serial number ![]() Ed

John,
Your Luger has some very interesting characteristics. If possible, please show us good, closeup pictures of the markings on the barrel, as they have something useful to tell about the gun. Markings can be poorly stamped and stamps can be damaged, and the markings are always cryptic! It takes an experienced eye and practiced hand to meaningfully translate them to a drawing. --Dwight |

The C/N proofing on the left receiver indicates to me a commerical DWM that has been rebarrelled to 9mm post 1938 with a code 42 Armour's spare barrel. TH

Thanks for the responses!
You are absolutely right about me trying to draw those symbols, Dwight. I will see if someone at work has a better close-up camera I can borrow. I did find a 10x pocket microscope, and looked at everything again. That symbol on the left side of the barrel actually looks nothing like the drawing I made - which was based on what I saw through a 2x magnifying glass. With the 10x scope I saw extra marks and polished areas that make me think someone filed away (poorly) an older image and then did a poor job striking an eagle in its place. When I get the camera I will take a photo of the suffix letter on the front of the frame also. I cannot find it in the Letter Suffixes Charts, but here is how I'd describe it: if you go to the "Letter Suffixes Chart 1" and overlay the 1st "Q" on the 2nd "A", that's what it looks like. For some reason I can't get into Ed Tinker's photo list to see if there is already a picture of it there. As for the magazine not having a s/n - I swear, it does not look like there were ever any numbers on the magazine, Ed. No scratches or file marks or polished places either. How hard would it have been for someone to transfer the aluminum bottom onto a new magazine? Finally, the 10x scope showed that the "3" of the number "36" on the trigger slide plate looks to have been struck over a "4" . Could this have been done in an effort to deceive? JohnH |

John,
Are there numbers stamped on the bottom edges of the trigger plate and takedown lever? --Dwight |

Man! Did I ever find a camera that can do close-ups! A brief description of each is following. Dwight, there are no numbers stamped on the bottoms edges of either the plate or lever. However, on the back-center of the plate is a "6" or "9", and also on the back near the rear edge is the number"57".
...and once again, I appreciate your taking an interest in this. JohnH (1) This is the suffix symbol on the front of the frame. (2) and (3) Two views of the mark on the barrel that looks like a poorly struck eagle to me. (4)Eagle on topside of barrel (5)Crown over N in at least 3 places on the gun (6)The 3 looks like it is struck on top of a 4 (7) One of the many marks on the frame http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload...x_on_frame.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/bbl_left1.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/bbl_left2.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/bbl_top.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/crown_n.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload...lt_ovrstrk.jpg http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/frame_ovr_trig.jpg |
