my FiL's byf 42

An excellent example of some of the last Mauser produced Lugers... they are among the best ever produced because they used the best metallurgy available...

The "42" indicates the year of manufacture, and the "byf" stands for production by Mauser.

Try to post some more photos taken in better light, TOP, BOTH SIDES, and front of the frame to know more about it. If you post the serial number, including the suffix letter, more than likely FRANK or one of the other Mauser afficionado's can tell you pretty close to when it left the factory.
