Default to shoot or not?

Kinda new to lugers, i read a lot here about not shooting an all matching nice org. luger because you might damage a part that is org. to the gun and lower the value of the gun and make it a shooter. if you were going to buy one like that should you shoot it to see if it work,s and take a chance on breaking a org. part? or just buy it as is because it,s a great looking gun with all org. part,s? is it worth the risk to fire it before buying it?.

I have one thats collector grade I got a couple of years ago and shoot it once in a while. If I did break a part I figure by the time I cash in 20 or 30 years from now it will still be worth way more than what I paid for it.

If you are in it for the money in the long run then I wouldn't shoot a collector grade.

You can also buy some spare parts that would be most common to break, firing pin, extractor etc and change out the originals to shoot with.

I asked these very same questions when I bought my all matching numbers 1936 S/42. I really wanted to shoot it so, I bought aftermarket parts to replace the originals for when I shoot the gun. The parts I bought are the firing pin, extractor, ejector and a pair of aftermarket black widow grips. Now, I can enjoy shooting my Luger without worrying about breaking the parts that are most vulnerable. I think I spent about $100 for the aftermarket parts. Enjoy your Luger.

A true collector grade Luger probably shouldn't be shot, though it pains me to say that about any gun. A shooter can be had for 5-600 dollars, still quite a bit of money, but good protection for an investment.

All my Lugers are shooters; I'm not a collector, just an a fan.

Go to ebay and buy a complete toggle train and a megar magazine. Swap these out for originals when you have an irrational compulsion to take a downside risk with no attendent upside reward. These will ensure that 99.9% of potential firing damages will not result to the parts that make the gun go BOOM.

my luger is a 1936 S/42, all matching except the mag. after a few mo,s i had to see if would go bang. i took it to the range and had some problems with it. i replaced the firing pin with one i bought at a gun show. it worked great. i took the replacement firing back out and put it in a small zip lock bag with a note to use this firing pin to fire the gun. i put the org # firing pin back in the gun, and ill never try to fire it agin. but at least i know it works. and its all back to org. am i wrong??
