The "maximum range" of any bullet will depend on a variety of factors. However, there is no way a 9mm Luger cartridge will launch a bullet "8,000 meters" and/or about "5 miles".

As a rule of thumb, remember that a 30-06 rifle when elevated at a 45 degree angle will launch its bullet about 5 miles.

Here's one educated "ball park" figure for the 9mm Luger:

NRA Firearms Fact Book. Yew York. Second Edition. 1983. "â?¦ a 9 mm 120 grain bullet fired out of an average sized handgun at 45 degrees elevation will travel about 2300 meters before falling."

Other sources will say its about 1800 meters. But you get the idea.

And this is not the "maximum effective range" which is much shorter, and is the range at which you can reasonable expect to still hit your target, among other things.
