Default noob to lugers, can you help ID this

Have to start with a freindly hello to you all.

I humbly come here seeking knowledge on behalf of a computer-challenged coworker.
He scooped up a luger as part of a 4-gun purchase, less than $600 paid for the 4, and the blue book just doesn't seem to jive with how things really are.

If I don't botch it, here are the pics...

is this groove for attaching a simple buttstock?

yeah, the spare mag doesn't match, but without taking it all down, everything seems to.

I thank any and all that chime in on this, and I'm sure my co-worker will be rightly 'preciative.

If you were curious, it was an old widow disposing of her husbands stuff, she is aware of higher prices but just wanted to get the stuff out.

First, let me welcome you to the LugerForums. It's good to have you here. Thanks for posting the pictures. Links are better for those who have a slow internet connection so don't feel too bad about it.

Tell your friend I'll give him double what he paid for the four guns, and I'll be getting a Hell of a deal! It has one matching mag, a matching serial number take down tool and a matching serial number holster? If it's for real and not a clever fake, it's worth quite a bit more money than he paid.

Actually, if it's completely fake it's worth quite a bit more money than he paid for it...

The S/42 was a wartime code for Mauser manufacture. The 1938, as you can imagine, was the year of manufacture and is a more rare year of S/42. I saw a similar one for sale with a non-matching mag, no spare, no holster or take down tool for $1600 recently.

$1,600.......Holy o'cow!!

I have to head on in for a 12 hr night shift, and he's working tonight also.
I'll check back in once I get settled in, and let him see the thread.

I'm sure he'll be psyched out.

thanks!

Don, welcome to the forum. I agree about the slower for dial up users, however, as a moderator, I do prefer the pictures to be posted here; then the pictures stay with the thread (many times folks delete the photos after a while).

Generally you don't see matching holsters and tools on army; so I am thinking this is a police pistol. And if all matching worth around $2200 (internals have to match too) and that includes holster and tool. No matter what, the $600 was a steal just for the luger. what else did he get ??

Ed

PS: I was in Portsmouth, NH for work last year (for 5 months) and the owner of this forum is from NH.

Gee, I guess the guy had time off, but he just swung on into use the company dumpster and say hey.

I showed him the thread, and the link to the ones for sale, and he\'s very thankful and asked me to tell you guys so.

Although he was curious, he really is more of an accumulator vs. a collector....a shame.
I collect military rifles from WW2 and newer, so I\'ve actually learned a bit while trying to find out stuff about these for him, and who knows, I may try to get in on the action.
He says that that lady has more guns, and there is a p08 or something along those lines still to be had.

He says the lady is 82 years old, her husband was a Marine, as he also was, and that little common bond is what facililtated this little deal.
There are over 30 firearms and a safe involved.

I asked what the other 3 guns were from this deal, and he said that for $560 he got the luger,a S&W chiefs model 40 semi, he *thinks* a cat 9 9mm semi, and a high standard 22lr revolver....like I said, he\'s an accumulater, and doesn\'t really pay all that much attention to what he has.

As a side note, I stumbled upon Guns and Ammo tv after work this morning, and they had a little segment on a luger.
The luger was an all-matching WW1 gun, with a stock serial numbered to the gun, and a drum mag.
They were shooting at a target 150yards away, and had moderate success with hitting it, pretty damn fine for pistol shooting.
They said the gun was valued at $3,500 , and the stock about $1,500.

I see myself developing an interest...
