Default Restoring grips? help!

I have a nice matching numbered set ot 1906 grip safety grips to put on my pistol. The problem is: The guy I got them from put a coating of semi solid stain on them. Is there any way to get it off? It doesn't seem to be fully dried on as when I put the pistol in my foam case it leaves a slight stain residue behind on the foam. I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Doug

Doug, depends on how comfortable you are in messing with them. With Weimar period grips that were really nasty, old, dirty and oily, I have used paint stripper on them.

otherwise, normally I generally use murphys oil soap on them, and this takes most grime off.

any paint remover, soap, etc, makes them look very bleached out (which must be hard on the wood) and then I use tung oil on them. Used to use boiled lindseed oil, but that takes a long time to dry...

Hi Ed, Thanks for the reply. Does this work even if it is stain on them? Doug

Hello Doug:

I just got a 1906 eagle and cleaned the grips. I used Art Buchanan's method. The link is http://www.lugerforum.com/gripclean.html . I did find the grips have swollen a bit and do not fit right now. However, it seems that this is normal and that they will return to normal in a few days. Has anyone seen this swelling problem?

The stripper will not hurt them. I soaked mine for about 8 hours and wish I had gone 24 hours.

Good luck
