Default New to Forum, from Michigan

Just wanted to say hello. I am from Michigan and new to the forum.

I am primarily here to find a mid range priced functional Luger. I have always been fascinated by the Luger but want a shooter not a museum piece.

Any advice is more than welcome.

Welcome. Keep an eye on the for sale section for the pistol of your dreams.

welcome, good advice above. Keep in mind that a shooter will be reblued, mismatched or pitted on the outside. Anything "prettier" and cost will go up...

My father has a very nice Garand (shooter), a very nice 1938 Mauser (shooter) & a very nice original Ariska Rifle (also a shooter).

I am looking to collect the matching pistols for these rifles; .45, Luger, and Type 99 Pistol. I would prefer that they be shooters.

You will have to decide which is more correct for the Japanese. The type 26 is the revolver, used in WW2 but older, first serving prior to WW1. The Type 14 (Nambu) is the most encountered, and then it was replaced by the Type 94.

The Japanese rifle, both called Arisaka, was either the type 38 (6.5mm) or the type 99 (7.7 mm) are both correct and were both used in WW2, the type 99 being the latest.

If you decide you want to get the most correct, latest pistol, then you would have to get the German P38 and the Japanese Type 94....

Welcome to the LugerForums!

As the wise pipeman says, keep your eyes on the for sale section and you'll (eventually) find the gun for you at a reasonable and honest value.

My suggestion is that you make a book on Lugers your first purchase. Arm yourself with knowledge and then start looking. "Shooters" tend to run between $400 (if you're very lucky) to about $700 for a nice one. Above that you're going to get nicer shooters and low level (kinda) collectables.

(User results may vary, not valid in all states, viewer discretion is advised).

Good luck!

Let me add my welcome to the LugerForum.
There are a number of members here in Michigan, and around the Detroit area.

Big Norm tipped me off to the Michigan Antique Gun Collectors show, held in Novi - but I'm not sure of the dates. I haven't been to the Birch Run shows, but that's another possibility.

There have been some top rate .45's pictured here in the other firearms section that belong to members. I've been looking off and on locally too, but haven't found one I was interested in.

Keep your eye on the for sale forum, and learn from the forum members around here.

Fritz.

I have been to the Novi Antique arms show a few times. Mostly I noted a lot of old match, flint, and cap lock guns as well as old bolt guns. I don't recall seeing a lot of military arms, but then again at the time, I really wasn't looking.

Oh, and I apologize for the typo... it was a Type 94 that I was looking for, although a Type 14 would be interesting to own as well.

Thanks for the warm welcome....

Welcome fellow Michigander,
The Novi show is probably the best gun show in Michigan. There was a show there this past weekend. Too bad you missed it. You are right about there being a lot of flint locks. The shows rules are only guns made on or before 1964. Not much there as far as Lugers on Saturday. I picked up a neat navy holster and missed out on a 1906 navy that some guy, who was walking around, had but didn't bring with him. I asked him to bring it to the Sunday show. He did, but he sold it to a dealer before I had a chance to see it. I should have kept my mouth shut and went to his house to see it. As an apologetic gesture, he gave me an original artillery cleaning rod with a proof mark on the stem. Oh well, there are other Lugers.

The were two other 1906 navy Lugers there but both seemed to be redone. One of them was buffed and reblued for $4500. Rediculous! I don't know the price of the other one.

When you walk in the front door, go to the right wall and there are two guys there who always have Lugers for sale. One guy is Luger George (he has a Russian last name that nobody can pronounce) and the other guy is Art Wasek, who is selling off his collection and usually has 5 or 6 there, but no shooters that I know of. Other than that, the pickings were really slim at this particular show. Lugers there go in streaks. Maybe it was just too cold outside.

Another possibility is Weasels Gun Shop on Ryan and Nine Mile road. You might pay a bit more here than at other places, but they are not out of this world. (At least the last time I was there) One young guy there seems to know a little about Lugers, but isn't a wizbang.

Rightwire,
I forgot to mention the Green Acres Sportsman and Collectors Show is Sunday, February 18th. It is located at the Clawson-Troy Elks Club on 1451 E. Big Beaver. Thats East of Rochester Road and West of John R. April 15th will be the next show there (if you have any money left after paying your taxes). I haven't had much luck there, but you never know.
