Default S# suffix

I have a 1920 commercial w/ a (p) or an (r) suffix S#. I can't tell which it is. It looks more like a (p) to me,but the loop is not closed on the bottom. Can anyone verify if the loop of a (p) is open on the bottom or is it definately an (r).
I've noticed all letter suffixs are script and lower case. Any reason?
Thanks in advance,
Mike C.

Mike,

I don't know if anyone can answer your question definitively without a photo; however, I have seen (and have one example) of stamped suffixes such as "p" or "q" on Alphabet DWMs (aka 1920 Commercial) that are missing part of their "tails" because of the curvature of the frame.

This thread on Jan Still's forum discusses the whys and wherefors of the DWM serial numbering system: http://luger.gunboards.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9324.

Don ,
Thanks for the link. Very interesting. I thought there was more to it than it just looks cool. I'm learning more every day.

Morgan,
That's the link I needed. It's definitely a (p).

You guys are amazing. Thanks for doing our homework for us.
Mike C.
