My luger went full auto

I was shooting my recently aquired luger yesterday and after some time it went full auto and fired two rounds and jammed before a third could be fired. I cleared the jam and dropped the magazine, and when I set the pistol down the sideplate fell off. Apparently my finger was on the take down lever when the gun was firing. I know that the side plate has some function with regard to the trigger. Is it likely that accidentally pressing the takedown lever caused it to go full auto after the side plate started to slip out? Do I need to check out some other parts or go to a gunsmith? I would like to shoot the pistol some more, but not like this.

unlikely about side plate, see if you got a broken protruding firing pin, go our the gun, look for anything broken.....get back to us, hope this helps

If the take down lever i loose, perhaps the small spring under it is broken?
Since your sideplate fell off?
Can help you with a new part if needed

I don't see anything broken, but the firing pin is definately slightly bent. This was supposed to be a matching gun too, but the firing pin has a different number stamped on it.

I've looked over the pistol pretty well and nothing stands out besides the firing pin, but it moves freely in and out.

With the bolt removed from the gun, is the firing pin supposed to protrude through the breechface? I wish I had another gun here to compare it to.

Please take a look at the attachment. Is this part of the firing pin supposed to be angled? It also seems like it should stick out more.

with the bolt removed the firing pin will stick out in from the face, and the picture all looks well with the....if the firing pin is bent, and not sure myself if it is with out seeing a picture, and very good picture you provided, I would replace the pin.....you should state where it is you live, perhaps a LF member is near by who could help you....

The sear looks like it has some wear on it, I'll have to take a picture and see what you guys think. I'm in south-eastern virginia if anyone would like to see the gun in person.

Its really hard to get a good photo of the wear on the sear. I'll post these and see what you guys think. Are there drop-in replacements for the sear and firing pin? If I replace these two parts I think I would be comfortable with the idea of firing the gun again.

Sorry I live on the west coast, from pictures it looks OK, try putting it back together and see if dry firing you can recreate the doubling, still what about the firing pin, I believe once you stated it was bent??

It looked bent when I rolled it between my fingers, but upon closer examination I believe it is straight. I may try firing it again, with only two rounds, and keep my fingers off the takedown lever. I need to get another magazine as the mexican one I have doesn't feed all the well.

After handling this thing for a while, and figuring out how it works, I think the side plate coming loose did cause the problem. It probably let the trigger bar stud pop back out or not depress at all during the recoil. I think I am correct in assuming that this is the reset mechanism that keeps one shot per trigger pull. So, however unlikely, the loose sideplate let the stud/plunger come back forward, but had enough pressure to disengage the sear from the firing pin(perhaps my thumb was on it) after the next round was chambered.

Patrick,

I think you have correctly diagnosed your own problem. If the takedown lever is loose, and does not stay in position when you are firing the gun, check the spring that holds it in place to be sure it is not broken or missing.

Patrick... one last suggestion... Get yourself a new magazine... the mexican aftermarket mags are the worst mags made... I have one that looks like it was made by convicts with only a file and sandpaper...

I recommend you get a Mec-gar reproduction, or even better would be an original extruded type...
