The helmets shown in these pics make the soldaten look kind of goofy to me. Though I realize that the military headgear has changed over time, regime, and different purposes/jobs, I'm not particularly familiar with this evolution, so sorry if my observation seem uninformed--it is!
Yup, that guy is a monster... It might be pointing out the flame thrower. Its business end is just below center oval, and I can make out the hose hanging behind him. They wore no special protective gear?

This reminds me of the 1950's shipments from Sam Cummings and Interarms. Lugers cost about $35, mail order. One of the Interarms salesmen in Alexandria, Virginia, told me that every crate shipped from Europe was a "treasure hunt." We poor students couldn't afford to buy more that a couple Lugers back then. I've tried to make up for that since then, though.
