When I was a kid about once a year I used to buy an Elgin pocket watch at the corner cigar store for $1.00. I remember the store very well and the wooden indian that stood outside the door. They had a permanent gas flame burning by the counter so you could light your cigar. I always hoped against hope that the watch would be a reliable timepiece, but those Elgin watches never ran more than a few weeks, as they had absolutely no jewels in the movement and wore out almost immediately. I don't think they are repairable.
