Old Elgin Watch

hey guys, I got an Elgin Watch from my dad today (I have several old watches) but this one is not working. Anyone know a reputable and good watch repair person?

I knew a guy about 10 years ago, but

Thanks, I checked through old e-mails and came across a lawyer named "Barry", wrote him and he gave me a guy he trusted, in Georgia, sent him my watch yesterday, we'll see! Dang, meant to take before and after pictures...

When I was a kid about once a year I used to buy an Elgin pocket watch at the corner cigar store for $1.00. I remember the store very well and the wooden indian that stood outside the door. They had a permanent gas flame burning by the counter so you could light your cigar. I always hoped against hope that the watch would be a reliable timepiece, but those Elgin watches never ran more than a few weeks, as they had absolutely no jewels in the movement and wore out almost immediately. I don't think they are repairable.

I think it depends on the "jewel" count? I personally have had trouble with the few Elgins I have bought and had fixed, Walthams work well for me! But this one I won't carry, it was my Great-Grandfathers Counsins watch, so we'll see!

How ya doing Aaron? Haven't "heard" from you in a while? Hope all is well,

Ed is correct; all Elgins are not created equal. ;)

Just a short story on a gift that was given to me from Tom Armstorng. It is a Uboat stop watch that was "wound too tight" I took it to a littla ole watch maker that lives in town and told him what I thought was the problem, his response was "does your car have too much gas " He took offf the back and in two seconds the watch was running perfectly at a cost of 1.50 I gave him a ten spot and walked away with a smile.

There is an online site about watch repair I ran across which flatly spoofs the "wound too tight" statements. And I had a jeweler tell me once to wind them all the way, that they needed it.

If it doesn't work out, the store is on the NE corner in a little shopping center. Rolex and others. I had them clean and recalibrate one of my Hamiltons eariler this year. First rate job.
