Default Chamber marking

Also, Ted and I have both posted inquiries about the odd chamber mark on both forums without success. I have discovered a "possible" explanation. This photo is from page 83 of G�¶rtz German Small Arms Markings. The 1917 may not be the year, but a weapon number.
Pure speculation, but plausable. The mark in the photo is on the backstrap and not the chamber, however.
