Hi Ron,

Here is a link to one of my 1943 dated P.38 police holsters. It doesn't show the inside of the holster but it does have the pull up strap.

Here is a link to a commercial AKAH P.38 holster that has the police style closure, also.

Both of these holsters are black, of course.

If his holster was a P.38 style holster, I would say it is one of the early HP/Swedish Contract holsters. They were a cordovan color with the police style closure. Here is a link to pictures of one of those. Most did not have the stamping in the front of the flap, like this one does.
