that is just what "tiger wood" looks like. carves nicely, and is strong when carved. tiger maple can also have a similar grain, and it is possible to find a cut with that much of the same stripping.(that straight) often in tiger maple you will still see some swirls or curved grain areas that look like watermarks. like those around the bump on the piece on the right. not always in small pieces, but you will see some areas that look almost clear. i can't make out on my screen what the fine grain looks like. there are a few other woods that have some of the same features .. sometimes. even mahogany can do that . more often if it comes from asia rather than south america, for some reason. pretty tough to tell without seeing the rest of the piece it came from. a good call on your part, i think.
