Honestly, I do not know how or when the muzzle protectors were used. I guess it is just part of the Swiss love of Lugers. The Swiss used the Luger regularly in competition so perhaps is as simple as keeping a scrupulously cleaned bore spotless between matches. I have seen the photos of the Luthy device in books but never any explanation regarding their use.
