Well, looking at this again, I'm not at all sure the "E" is an "E", maybe a "B".
Perhaps poorly struck on the curved surface to begin with, and then the loops lost due to polishing. Note how the center of the "8" has been lost. I don't suppose there is a picture of the receiver from the right side, kind of hard to look around the corner.
