As to the impact of eliminating this gun free zone at this time, no one will ever know...
But, the intent of establishing the gun free zone was to stop "gun violence". Obviously it didn't work here. And, "gun violence" is not that difference from "violence" in general. If it were lethal "knife violence" or "fist violence" which is more common, the press would not be covering it this widely. If the perpetrator had chosen to attack others, including myself if I were there, I would be better off if I were not disarmed. The results for others would vary in unpredictable ways.

I know many people who carry a gun when they go to the movies, simply because they're afraid to be unarmed in a "gun free zone". If they don't care to do it, I can't see why a potential killer would. Again, there's a serious lack of logic in this, almost like they think that this stupid sign on the door magically makes a criminal obey the law. I'm sure it all stems from the anti-gun lobby's paranoia, they think that anyone with a gun is a ticking time bomb and likely to be the perpetrator of a crime. The guns somehow make them evil. If they could just get that misconception out of their heads, we would have come a long way towards a healthier debate. And believe it or not: The latest move here is that campus staff with a carry permit now can carry a gun at the university. I don't know if it's in effect yet, but it seems like the gears have finally started turning. |
