Another Campus shooting?

I'm a bit fed up with these "gun-accidents", also because in these cases international medias often tend to report your Country as an extremely violent one, and I'm sorry for that, as I don't really believe that is so bad as they describe it.

Sympathy to the victim, but it looks like another gun free zone failure...

Hi Marc,
It's been reported that this was a murder suicide. If all the students on campus were armed, how many lives would have been saved?

Maybe the victim, but probably none. I'd still say that the gun free zones are a feel-good measure that only makes matters worse, those who really intend to use a gun will bring it anyway. It's not like a potential murderer will turn around and walk home just because the sign on the door says "Gun free zone", to him it will read "Have at it, we're unarmed".

Really, the vast majority of the mass shootings we see take place in gun free zones (schools, churches, movie theaters etc), and it's not to far fetched to believe there's a reason for that pattern.

As to the impact of eliminating this gun free zone at this time, no one will ever know...

But, the intent of establishing the gun free zone was to stop "gun violence". Obviously it didn't work here. And, "gun violence" is not that difference from "violence" in general. If it were lethal "knife violence" or "fist violence" which is more common, the press would not be covering it this widely.

If the perpetrator had chosen to attack others, including myself if I were there, I would be better off if I were not disarmed. The results for others would vary in unpredictable ways.

In fact things like these do not happen at shooting ranges.

In fact things like these do sometimes. I myself was almost involved with one at my private skeet club some 40 years ago.

There is a serious lack of logic in the "gun free zones" (which is a moniker I always like to put within quotation marks). If somebody intends to kill somebody, he is already planning to commit one of the very worst crimes there is. So in that perspective, how would a "gun free zone" be a deterrent? Would a perpetrator reconsider because he's afraid to be busted carrying a gun? That theory is flat out laughable.

I know many people who carry a gun when they go to the movies, simply because they're afraid to be unarmed in a "gun free zone". If they don't care to do it, I can't see why a potential killer would. Again, there's a serious lack of logic in this, almost like they think that this stupid sign on the door magically makes a criminal obey the law.

I'm sure it all stems from the anti-gun lobby's paranoia, they think that anyone with a gun is a ticking time bomb and likely to be the perpetrator of a crime. The guns somehow make them evil. If they could just get that misconception out of their heads, we would have come a long way towards a healthier debate.

And believe it or not: The latest move here is that campus staff with a carry permit now can carry a gun at the university. I don't know if it's in effect yet, but it seems like the gears have finally started turning.
