Because of the way the frame has been cut and apparently set up to be longer, I would speculate that the original perpetrator of this design had intended to use a cartridge that had a much longer overall length than the standard 9mm round.

Perhaps a wildcat cartridge, or something line 7.63mm Mauser or Tokarev? .30 Caliber Carbine? or 9mm Longo? or 9mm Bergmann?
