Donating a gun to a museum is not the way to go. It is generally underappreciated, is not well taken care of and will eventually be sold off to finance new acquisitions and/or facility costs or relegated to uncontrolled storage to make room for new exhibits, never to be seen again. I have seen old guns that languished in a museum basement that were reduced to red lumps of rust and rotting wood.
