Doug, I was thinking the friend whacked the magazine in place to seat it (a practice popularized on TV).

The only other way I can think of to break the plastic base is to overload it...Trying to get 9 rounds in...Or maybe even just jamming 8 rds in...

Of course, if this is one of those competitions where you shoot, drop the mag out and insert another as quick as possible, it's likely it was dropped on the ground...
