Mec-Gar Baseplate Broke - Replacement Needed
 

I loaned a Mec-Gar magazine to a friend that wanted to shoot his Luger in an IDPA-like match. On the last stage as he was loading the pistol, the magazine baseplate broke in two pieces and the magazine contents went flying onto the ground. The spring was found but the metal plug-like piece that fits on the end of the spring is missing. Where can I find replacement parts?

I think a new MecGar magazine is probably the cheapest option.

And teach your friend how to load a luger magazine. You don't need a hammer to shove it in.

GT has replacement bases; aluminum, wood, and he probably even has some used Mec-Gar plastic bases...

In any kind of competition, a Luger magazine should be held in a loosely closed fist with your thumb placed along the magazine's length. This allows you to use the "hand finds hand" feature of our body's nervous system. (Try it. Close your eyes and try to touch your index fingers together without looking. They will always find each other, regardless of a visual reference). By having the extended thumb up near the magazine's mouth seek the hand on the pistol's grip, rather than a waving, exposed magazine body, you are much more likely to center and seat the magazine in its well on the first attempt.

Doug, I was thinking the friend whacked the magazine in place to seat it (a practice popularized on TV). :banghead:

The only other way I can think of to break the plastic base is to overload it...Trying to get 9 rounds in...Or maybe even just jamming 8 rds in... :rolleyes:

Of course, if this is one of those competitions where you shoot, drop the mag out and insert another as quick as possible, it's likely it was dropped on the ground...

I had a MecGar magazine break like this on me. I think it's just brittle plastic. I had inserted the magazine and fired the first two shots when the base and spring blew out the bottom, followed by the remaining rounds. I had bought the mag new, never abused it, and used it several times before.

I shot over 7,000 rounds through mine. Never failed me.

But I never loaded to full capacity. 5 round limit on the range, 6 round limit on military pistol training / competition.
