The 50 round boxes are usually commercial boxes. The German army procured them in boxes of 16 rounds (enough to fill 2 P08 magazines). There are some exceptions to this rule, but they are relatively rare. Here are some examples of WW1 German ammo boxes.

Shown as well is a commercial 50 round DWM ammo box (.30 luger, but the 9mm is similar in style).

The last one is a navy box. They had their own packaging and label style.
