It is easy to remove the grip safety and it is not necessary to remove the spring. HOWEVER, if you remove the grip safety there is no way to make the gun safe. The thumb safety, as Michael pointed out, only blocks the grip safety from being depressed...it has no safety function on its own. It can't be made to operate like a non-grip safety gun by adding a sear blocking tab as the geometry is wrong. The cut on the sear bar has a backward slope rather than a forward slope. Hope that is clear enough, I don't have time to post photos right now.
