My Dilemna....
 

OK Guys....Heres whats bothering me.....Ive got a Beautiful 6" Interarms Mauser Pistol.....and it shoots great....my problem is for some reason I just don't like that dang grip safety.......IF... it didn't have that ...it would be a perfect pistol.....so.....whats the opinions and advice of doing away with the safety....and somehow just have the safety bar on back of the handle pushed down flush with backstrap....is this impossible.??.....and then hopefully have the thumb safety work as wartime lugers do....I appreciate any and all input on this...you guys have always bailed me out.....Hans Fischer

Get a shooter Luger without the grip safety... Leave your Interarms Pistol as it is... Perhaps sell it if necessary!

Hans, I don't think it would hurt the pistol to take it off? It's a removeable system..then the safety lever will work as normal pistols. Just put it back in when you want?

You can temporarily remove the grip safety spring and then wedge something against the grip safety lever to hold it depressed.

The grip safety makes every bit of sense on 1906 and 1906/29 pattern Lugers. In its presence, the manual safety lever functions merely as a security lock, enabling secure carry in the off position with a loaded chamber, thus making it the only Luger configuration suitable for a fast draw.

how do you suggest I get the safety grip to stay down.?.....Hans Duct tape comes to mind. I am not all that familiar with the Interarms Mauser Pistol so if you physically remove the safety grip there may be no indent to hold the safety lever?
I am just suggesting removal of the grip safety. This should allow the pistol to work in a normal manner. The grip safety is just a spring loaded lever that pushes the safety off.With it out of action..everything goes back to manual. You wouldn't even have to remove the spring..just the grip safety. I think....

It is easy to remove the grip safety and it is not necessary to remove the spring. HOWEVER, if you remove the grip safety there is no way to make the gun safe. The thumb safety, as Michael pointed out, only blocks the grip safety from being depressed...it has no safety function on its own. It can't be made to operate like a non-grip safety gun by adding a sear blocking tab as the geometry is wrong. The cut on the sear bar has a backward slope rather than a forward slope. Hope that is clear enough, I don't have time to post photos right now.

If you really want the safety to stay pressed in cut some bicycle tire tubing and slip it on.

Another thought would be to replace the current grip safety spring with one that is lighter in poundage. That way, it would take very little effort/grip, to disengauge the grip safety. I did this very thing on a S&W Mod. 40 "lemon squeezer" revolver, and it made all the difference in the World as to function......just a thought.

Can anyone here spell "liability".....doing away with, or modifiny, the safety on anything is wrong on so many levels....

Funny thing..I own several semi auto pistols John Browning didn't even put a safety on. It's my understanding he thought they were un necessary to a thinking man. No revolvers I own except my Reichrevolvers have a safety. My middle name must be liability!

Actually, depending on what revolvers you own, you might...it's called a transfer bar.

Ron, As you might imagine I don't own many modern revolvers..None with a transfer bar...None with a fireing pin block or hammer block. None of these are "true safeties" They are mostly drop safeties..preventing the firing pin from contacting the primer when dropped on unless the trigger is intentionally activated. The best safety ever devised is the mind of man..
I carry a .38 Colt Cobra just because it has NO safety. In a stressful situation it takes no thought to point and pull the trigger. I have watched many times on a Police fireing line..FIRE! about one out of ten Policemen on the line will be looking down at their weapon wondering why it didn't fire..the safety was on.
In a life threatening situation...I don't want to be thinking about why my weapon won't work. From past experience..I know I will want my mind cleared of that small matter.

And they all flinched... :D

Rich..I have a pistol range here beside my leather shop and shoot almost anytime a gun buddy comes by. Last Summer I was handed a Ruger SAA revolver .45 that had been highly polished stainless steel with a Bisley grip and hammer. I had a little gun oil on my hands and as I pulled back on the hammer to charge it..it went off. I was totally unfamiliar with the pistol and needless to say it shocked some sense into me. I had it pointed down range and in front of me about 20 feet is where the bullet went..so we must all recognize that these toys we play with are not something to take for granted.
I realize how important safeties are and how important it is to practice proper range safety. Only one mistake could change your life or someone elses.
I still wouldn't take that SAA Bisley as a gift though...It has an accidental discharge written all over it in neon lights.

Back in the 70's, I was on the way out woodchuck hunting with a buddy. The rifles were in the back of my Chevy station wagon, and we were in the front loading our pistol magazines and holstering our pistols (WW II Walther P-38 for me, Colt Gov't model for my buddy). I inserted the magazine, let the slide run forward, and toggled the safety to "Safe". The hammer went down, there was a loud "BANG", and I had a hole in my door panel. (My finger was outside the trigger guard). We were both shaken, and since then I have adopted Fox Mulder's philosophy..."Trust...No One"... :rolleyes:

Strangely, there was no hole in the outside of the door...When I finally donated the car to the local fire dep't, I took the door apart and found a nice deep dent in the window winder "X"...The winder was .100" thick x .750" wide, and the operation of the winder was not affected...Since that time, I have a very dim opinion of 9mm ammunition... :mad:
