I've been using the "Gun Socks" that are silicone impregnated from vendors like Midway USA.

They have a small loop sewn in at the base of the sock that has about a half inch of inner clearance.

By making a 2 line label using a Brother "P-Touch" label maker, and printing the information twice (their PC software makes this easy), slipping it through the loop and folding it over to stick the label to itself, I end up with a small indelible easily read label.

I'll post some pictures when I can take them...
