The original stamping of a serial number in the metal of a gun disturbs the metal at a greater depth than the stamped number. When a serial number is filed off a gun Magnetic flux testing can be used to detect the disturbed area and identify the original serial number. Magnetic flux testing has been successful in identifying unit markings ground off the front straps of Imperial unit marked Lugers.
