I have a 1940 Code 42 with a serial number 14xxe, and the local sheriff contacted me about a stolen Luger with a serial number 14xx. It took some time and research to convince him that the fact that the stolen pistol did not have the "e" suffix meant that my Luger was not the one that had been stolen. It is extremely important to include the letter suffix on any records that you may have on your own pistols.
